Part of my morning routine is to open a daily pill container and down several personal chosen supplements. Knowing my family history of health concerns and falling short of an ideal consistent nutritional intake, taking this precautionary measure promotes optimizing my health. I know there are varying opinions out there whether these are beneficial or not. It is not my prerogative to convince you to take a multivitamin pill or any other well marketed supplement. It has proved, by way of lab results, to work well on my behalf.
Following ingesting these vitamins, I open a small bottle of mustard seeds and attempt to retrieve one seed. Often times I come up with three or four. No matter. I swallow however many seeds are attached to my finger. Why mustard seeds, you ask? The health benefits from such a small portion are minute at best. I select a mustard seed every morning to remind myself of the importance of having faith. Jesus said in Matthew 17:20 that if my faith is as small as a mustard seed, I can tell mountains to move, and they will. And nothing will be impossible for me. This is an amazing promise! Every day requires giant leaps of faith. I do not want to forget the source of where that faith originates.
Digging into the Word a little deeper I also discovered that my faith needs a little extra boost as well. 2 Peter 1:5-7 ESV states, “For this very reason, make every effort to SUPPLEMENT (emphasis mine) your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.” Faith is believing in what cannot be seen with the human eye, but believing in your heart what God has spoken. Virtue involves high moral living. To gain knowledge I must be open to studying the Word often. Self-control requires dying to my flesh and giving the Holy Spirit reign of my thoughts and actions. It is only then that I am not allowing the enemy to infiltrate my mind and consequently my behavior. Steadfastness keeps me determined in my steps-persistent and not wavering. Godliness occurs when I have a relationship with God. I know Him more when I invite Him into everything I do. Because of an intimate connection with Him as the perfect role model, I aspire to act more like my Father. Brother affection, or brotherly kindness as the NASB version reads, is something that we all need, but is becoming more of a rarity in our culture. Ending with love-learning to unselfishly seek the best for others and to do things for their benefit, borrowing from the Amplified Version.
Spiritually speaking, what SUPPLEMENTS am I lacking? I obviously do not walk a perfect life and need to take inventory of what areas need a boost. Faith? Virtue? Knowledge? Self-control? Steadfastness? Godliness? Brotherly affection? Love? All of the above? Yes to all. Let us not get comfortable or lazy in how we take care of our physical bodies or our spiritual health. God help us to remember to SUPPLEMENT what You have instilled in us with all of the attributes Your Word teaches us. May we become more and more like You today and every day.
